New leadership, and a new vision all from ETC!

At EclecticPond Theatre Company, we often like to talk about the journey we take in theatre and in our community. The last few years have been filled with change, and ETC’s journey has taken us to many new places.

Since leaving the Irvington Lodge as our permanent home in 2014, ETC has had the pleasure to partner with such great organizations throughout Indianapolis as IndyFringe, The Indy Indie Artist Colony, The Basile Opera Center, Irvington United Methodist Church, and many more.

With the coming season, ETC will usher in another change as we say goodbye to our artistic director and co-founder and say hello to a new vision.

After co-founding ETC and guiding our path for five years, Artistic Director Thomas Cardwell is pleased to step back and pass a thriving company on to friend and colleague, Benjamin Schuetz.

Tom and Ben Cropped

Thomas Cardwell (left) and Benjamin Schuetz (right) looking dapper.

Schuetz, a longtime ETC Associate Artist, will serve as the company’s artistic director, bringing a new energy and enthusiasm, as well as a new goal: celebrate Indiana.

According to Schuetz, “ETC’s new vision is meant to build on the great things that the company has already done.  Telling stories about Indiana is perhaps the most significant change, which will be accomplished through original works and adaptations by local playwrights.  Such has been the case with 10×10, which ETC successfully produced thrice, and was written by Jeremy Grimmer and Thomas Cardwell:  two playwrights living in the Hoosier State.

“Shakespeare is here to stay, but we will continue to expand our exploration of other classical works, much like past ETC productions of The Importance of Being Earnest, The Speckled Band, and The Cherry Orchard.  Lastly, a greater presence of music will bolster ETC’s storytelling, similar to Paige Scott’s haunting compositions for The Tempest: Adrift in Time, and Ben Asaykwee’s clever musical contributions to Dracula: The Panto.”

Chalice

The ceremonial passing of the ETC Chalice and Willy. Congratulations, Benjamin!

To see what new Artistic Director Benjamin Schuetz and the rest of us at ETC have in store, stay tuned for the announcement of EclecticPond Theatre Company’s 2016-2017 season.  Until then, check out Drankspeare, appearing as part of the 2016 IndyFringe Theatre Festival at CSz Indianapolis-Home of ComedySportz.  In this fast-paced romp of a show, our talented company presents Romeo & Juliet in under an hour… and under the influence.  Sponsored by Sun King Brewing Company and directed by Thomas Cardwell.  (We aren’t letting him go that easily.)

Moving Plans for ETC

We are thrilled to announce our plans to partner with Black Acre Brewing Company in conjunction with the Irvington Development Organization!

ZED_8099 - ETC at CF announcement

EclecticPond Theatre Company, a proud member of the Irvington Business Association, intends to lease space within The Irvington Coal Factory, a 50,000 square-foot property that is to be the future home of restaurants, office space, artisan food production, and retail as well as additional opportunities for arts and entertainment. Approximately 2,800 square feet neighboring the Black Acre brewing facility would be available for ETC to develop into a new black-box theatre, allowing for the flexibility to continue our tradition of touring productions while maintaining a permanent home within the Irvington community that has helped make ETC what it is today. As a 501(c)(3) company and a member of the Shakespeare Theatre Association, EclecticPond is dedicated to providing imaginative and accessible classic theatre, and the Coal Factory presents an exciting opportunity to invigorate interest in theatre for a variety of audiences. We are thrilled to join with other businesses and organizations to offer Indianapolis a venue for community participation, involvement, and education.

The Coal Factory project is being funded in part by a $500,000 grant from the city and will be located just two blocks south of ETC’s first home, the Irvington Lodge. The development will rest along the Pennsy Trail between Audubon and Ritter.

As we continue to make plans, never fear! Our 2014-2015 season continues with 10x10xYou, the third iteration of our audience-favorite, fundraising show! This year the ten plays by Shakespeare that will be performed in (roughly!) ten minutes each have been determined by popular vote. Watch our website and “like” our Facebook page to catch all announcements about the cast. We are excited to announce that this year’s performances will be held at the Irvington United Methodist Church, 30 N Audubon Rd, Indianapolis.
